Impact of a new national screening policy for Down’s syndrome in Denmark

After implementation of a national screening policy, the number of infants born with Down’s syndrome and the rate of invasive procedures was noticeably reduced, according to this population based cohort study. What should clinicians do when faced with conflicting recommendations?

Clinicians need guidelines and use them all the time, but they should not accept recommendations uncritically, says this editorial. To serve their patients well, they must be able to make informed judgments about which guidelines are appropriate, and what to do when recommendations conflict with one another.
