What Is Burning Man?
Burning Man is a festival that was started in 1986 by two friends. These two friends were Larry Harvey and Jerry James. Burning Man was meant to be a festival that brought together a community of artists.
At Burning Man a giant effigy of a man is burned, hence the name. The idea behind it all is to let go. To burn away all the bad memories and experiences and bring forth the light of optimism. It was important to create but also know that nothing lasts.
These days Burning Man is a bit more of a commercialized event and attracts over 65,000 people a year. Instead of San Franciso, it is in the Black Rock Desert of Nevada. It isn’t just a festival, it is a whole experience of community and art.
Burning Man And Drug Use
One of the things Burning Man is most well-known for is, of course, the drug use. The festival allows the psychedelic experience to help change perception and enhance the experience creatively. But they don’t promote drug use and instead encourage people to follow the laws, so they stay safe.
Since drugs are not allowed people tend to do them privately at Burning Man. That means there isn’t really a general list of drugs that are used there. It is definitely thought that psychedelic and psychoactive drugs are used there though to enhance the experience and open the mind.
Some of these drugs include:
- 2C Family
- Dextromethorphan (DXM)
- Lysergic Acid Diethylamide (LSD)
- Psilocybin (Magic Mushrooms)
The point behind Burning Man isn’t to use drugs though. It is about facing life head on and accepting yourself and how you live. Drugs are often used to foster that experience, though that isn’t what the festival promotes.
Psychedelic or hallucinogenic drugs are often taken to do the opposite. They help avoid problems in life and can cause psychological dependence.
Not everyone goes to Burning Man for the same reason. Yeah, some people go because they want to use drugs. But others go for the community or even the music.
Burning Man is meant for those who value who people are, not what they have. It does attract a kind of crowd that celebrates drug use, but that shouldn’t be what defines the festival. It’s about telling social status to bug off and focusing on the experience of discovery.
Is Burning Man Safe?
In general, yes, Burning Man is safe. But if you are someone who is trying to recover for addiction, then Burning Man is not the best crowd for you. There will be people who use drugs in the crowd and that can trigger people who are trying to fight their addiction.
Burning Man can be a wonderful and life-changing experience just as it is meant to. But it should only be experienced if it is safe for you in all aspects.
